BOARDING PROGRAM
Our resident life program is about family and community. Close friendships that students develop often last a lifetime. We have a healthy resident life community led by dorm directors and staff who create a safe, supportive, compassionate, and respectful family environment.
Just as TKA becomes a “home away from home” for resident life students, dorm directors and staff become “parents away from home” for our students. Our resident life staff are teachers and coaches and have high moral character. They invest time getting to know their students and support and encourage them academically, socially, physically, and spiritually. Dorm directors and staff live with our students in the dormitories and are fully involved in parenting them. Our dorm directors review each student’s grades weekly and assign students to one of two facilitated study halls according to each student’s academic progress.
Activities are scheduled with our student’s work load as a priority. Most of the activities are optional, allowing our students to prioritize their academic responsibilities. Optional activities may include hiking, outdoor experiences, shopping, movies and theme parks. Some examples of activities on campus in which students may participate include athletic events, drama, movie nights, baking nights, and pool parties.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International students are an integral part of our school family as they help to create a culturally diverse environment on our campus. International students study side-by-side with American students and experience American culture. However, they also experience cultures from all over the world and develop lifelong friendships with students from all over the globe. Students from an average of 12 different countries attend our school every year! Our students, staff, faculty, and school family are very welcoming to international students. The family atmosphere makes international students feel like they have a home away from home.
International students currently make up approximately 15% of the high school student population. This provides an excellent opportunity for international students to learn English outside of ESL classes. Our students also have fine arts, clubs, student government, and a variety of athletics in which to participate and/or assume leadership roles.
Student Support
Our school has been privileged to have international boarding students living on campus for over 80 years. Our faculty and staff understand the needs of international students and work closely with them as they adjust to TKA culture. International students benefit from the academic guidance provided by both the TKA guidance counselor, ESL teacher, and dorm staff. Our resident life directors and staff create a loving, structured, family environment for the students and support their personal needs.
ESL
International students come to our school from a wide variety of countries and cultures. For students who do not speak English as their first language, our ESL Program helps them to reach their English language goals.
Our school has a strong ESL program; therefore, we accept students with varying levels of English ability. We offer students opportunities to improve their English conversation, vocabulary, grammar, composition and reading skills. It is important for each student to succeed in the English language as it is the language used for instruction and everyday communication with teachers and peers.
Student Visa (I-20)
A student who does not have immigrant, refugee or permanent residency status in the United States will be issued I-20 upon completion of enrollment and payment of US$5,000 deposit. The I-20 is required to receive an F-1 Student Visa. For more information about student visas, visit travel.state.gov.
