About the board of trustees

The King’s Academy has a rich history dating back to 1840 when local farmers sent their children to a log cabin known as Owl College to learn their basic reading and  writing skills. That one-room schoolhouse expanded in 1880 when those farmers and other concerned parents  organized Boyds Creek Academy. The State of Tennessee issued the school’s first charter in 1887.

In 1932 a second charter solidified the academy’s corporate identity as Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy and a new partnership with the Tennessee  Baptist Convention began. In 1993, HCBA began doing business as The King’s Academy. The covenant partnership between HCBA/TKA and the Tennessee
Baptist Mission Board of the Tennessee Baptist  convention continues to this day and is based on:

  • The academy fulfilling the Great Commission through the ministry of Christian education, and
  • The Convention
    • Electing members to serve on the academy’s Board of Trustees and
    • Sharing financial support through the Convention’s Cooperative Program.

The academy’s Board of Trustees consists of 21 members who are elected by the Convention. Trustees serve three-year terms and may be eligible for election for three consecutive terms. A trustee must be a member of a Tennessee (Southern) Baptist church that participates in the Cooperative Program, a shared funding program now in its 100th year.

The Board of Trustees serves as the strategic governing and policy-setting body for the school and elects the President/Head of School who, in turn, is responsible for all additional personnel and operations.
