The mission endured.
From a community academy in the nineteenth century to the global Christian school that stands on the campus today, each name marks another chapter in the same continuing story of faith and learning.
The school is founded to provide quality education for children in the surrounding community.
The school is renamed in honor of Harrison Ellis, who donated land to the campus.
Churches of the Chilhowee Baptist Association begin providing financial support.
A revised charter formalizes the Academy’s Tennessee Baptist relationship.
The school begins operating under the name known by generations of families today.
The mission continues through students and families from East Tennessee and around the world.

Across five oral-history sessions, President Emeritus Dr. Walter Grubb reflects on nearly four decades of life at The King’s Academy. The story moves from his unexpected call back to East Tennessee through financial uncertainty, institutional rebuilding, growth, new facilities, personal illness, retirement, an unexpected return, and a final reflection on the faithfulness that carried the school through it all.

A family connection to Harrison-Chilhowee, a life in California, and an unexpected call bring Dr. Grubb back to East Tennessee and into the Academy’s story.

Financial pressure, leadership change, denominational tension, and an uncertain future force the Academy to decide what kind of school it will become.

A payroll crisis becomes a lesson in provision as stronger finances, younger students, international enrollment, academics, and spiritual identity reshape TKA.

Stability creates room for a new kind of challenge. A clearer identity, stronger community, enrollment growth, cultural change, and a major capital campaign culminate in the opening of the Tibbetts Building.
